Yerevan, November 21, 2017 - By the initiation of UN Armenia, the 18th UN corner was opened today at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Armen Muradyan, YSU President, Mr. Egor Zaitsev, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative, Ms. Lena Nanushyan, UNAIDS National Programme Officer, Mrs. Armineh Haladjian, UN Department of Public Information Yerevan Office Officer-in Charge, members of YSMU Scientific Board.
YSMU President greeted the guests: “The UN corner in YSMU will serve to the empowerment of the youth abilities and knowledge. It will shape grounds for the youth involvement in the implementation of the UN Global Agenda in general, and more specifically in tackling health issues.”
In his speech, WHO Representative E. Zaitsev indicated the importance of the initiative: “Indeed, it is very hard to develop as a professional without evidence-based medicine and with no opportunity to receive information on health. The use of the theoretical knowledge in practice is equally important.”
“Collaboration with the UN agencies will empower our future doctors to have their contribution in ending AIDS epidemic in Armenia until the year of 2030”, indicated Ms. Lena Nanushyan.
There are more than 300 publications (Books, posters, leaflets and other printed materials) in the YSMU UN Corner depository, published by the UN Headquarters, UN agencies (WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNDPI). These materials will contribute to the awareness raising of the UN among the youth, and to the joint celebrations of UN health-related days . The corner may also be used for convening various meetings with UN officials, for workshops, discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, new publication / report launching, etc.
The UN corners are founded for enhancement of public awareness and promotion of interest towards the UN values, its global agenda and policies upon the request of the hosts.
