Seminar Dedicated to International Day for Disaster Reduction

Live To Tell: Raising Awareness, Reducing Mortalityā€¯

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is celebrated annually on October 13 with a mission to urge all human beings, communities and governments to make more intensive efforts towards building more disaster-resilient communities and countries.

The slogan for this year’s DRR Day is “Live To Tell: Raising Awareness, Reducing Mortality”

Within the framework of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, and to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Reduction, a seminar titled “Disaster Risk Management in Armenia” was organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia, in cooperation with the World Bank and United Nations Development Programme.

Among the participants of the seminar were representatives of the World Bank, RA Ministry of Emergency Situations, RA Ministry of Finance, RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Development, UNDP, UNICEF, UNOCHA, UNDPI, Save the Children Armenia, World Vision Armenia, and Armenian Caritas Charitable Organization.

The agenda of the seminar included:

  • Current developments of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Armenia;
  • The results of the RA Disaster Risk Management capacity assessment and further steps;
  • The new strategic planning process for the RA Disaster Risk Management;
  • Incorporation of DRM into city planning through geospatial planning;
  • Sustainable Development and Disaster Risk Reduction.

This event opened the traditional event series dedicated to disaster risk reduction which take place in Armenia from October 13 through December 7. Within this period, all the DRR partner institutions, along with the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations, organize events that engage more people more intensively.

At the end of the seminar, the video film “The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development Goals” was screened. The film, along with other five videos, has been translated into Armenian through the efforts of the United Nations Department of Public Information Yerevan Office. Besides, the participants of the seminar received a brochure including a DVD of the six mentioned UNISDR animated films, which was published with the support of UNDP and World Bank.
