UN Peace Mandate - Reference Paper No. 1
The present Reference Paper gives brief information on one of the primary objectives of the United Nations Organization since its establishment, which is preserving peace and providing global and regional security. All the other functions and objectives of the UN activities basically derive from this primary function of peace maintenance and constitute the components of the wider notion of security.
The UN Peace Mandate includes such activities as disarmament, actions against terrorism, nonproliferation of the nuclear weapons and other non-conventional weapons of mass destruction as well as the limitation of the use of the conventional weapons and landmines in particular. It touches upon the security in its narrower sense i.e. prevention of conflicts and peace maintenance, which concentrates on three main concepts: peacemaking, peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
The Reference Paper is dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of UN Peacekeeping officially celebrated on 29 May 2008 - on International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
It is compiled and prepared for publication by DPI intern Artak Galyan.
