At 1 020 million, for the first time in human history, more than one billion people are undernourished worldwide. This is about 100 million more than last year and around one‐sixth of all humanity.
The World Health Organization is today recommending six core actions that governments, public health authorities and hospital managers can undertake to make their health facilities safe during emergencies. These include training health workers, designing and building safe hospitals, retrofitting existing health facilities to make them more resilient and ensuring staff and supplies are secure during natural disasters, conflicts, outbreaks and other emergencies.
With the support of the Government of Japan and the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security in New York, assistance totalling USD 2,484,900.00 has been extended to the United Nations Agencies in Armenia i.e. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – the lead co-ordination agency of the project, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for the realisation of ‘Sustainable Livelihood for Socially Vulnerable Refugees, Internally Displaced and Local Families’ project in Armenia.
The United Nations established its presence in Armenia in 1992 soon after Armenia became a UN member. Since then the UN Agencies in Armenia, in accordance with their basic mandate have been implementing programmes compliant to local priorities.
Vulnerable populations are the main target : The initiative on soaring food prices now covers 54 countries. Vulnerable populations are the main target. FAO has just approved a series of projects in 48 countries for a total value of US$ 21 million to help small farmers and vulnerable households mitigate the negative effects of rising food and input prices. The project will provide farmers with agricultural inputs as of this month for an expected duration of one year. Funded by the Technical Cooperation Programme –i.e. FAO’s own resources – they are part of FAO’s Initiative on soaring food prices (ISFP)
