Winter 2008.Iraqi refugee families in Armenia: Due to the war in Iraq, in the past years,  some 1,000 persons fled from Iraq and were granted asylum in Armenia by GoA. The large majority of this group of refugees are of Armenian ethnicity - they came to Armenia as they consider it their homeland and were well received by the government and the host communities. UNHCR provides assistance to these refugees which face tremendous challenges when trying to integrate in Armenia i.e. the language barriers, unfavourable economic situation and inadequacy of public services, the very high costs of renting apartments, the lack of heating in the harsh climate conditions and severe long winters and the high rate of unemploymentMicro-credit and livelihood projects: Chips production in Marmarashen village of Ararat marz, many Iraqi families participate in the project as employees (the Iraqi refugee man has been employed by the family running the business. He resides in the newly reconstructed Social House in Darbnik, and was invited to cut the ribbon during the inauguration ).Micro-credit and livelihood projects: Welding workshop in Darakert village, Ararat marz. Winter 2008.Emergency Winterization Assistance: Food distribution in Daranak village, Ararat marz (food package for families with children included extra supply of milk in addition to beans, oil, sugar, flour and tea).
